Swastishree Gurukul IB World School Inaugurates SGMUN 4.0 with Grandeur and Vision

Kathmandu – Swastishree Gurukul IB World School has officially inaugurated the fourth edition of its Model United Nations conference, SGMUN 4.0, in a grand ceremony held on Friday. The event marks a significant milestone in the school’s mission to provide experiential learning beyond traditional classrooms under the theme, “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow.”
Directed and hosted entirely by students, SGMUN 4.0 aims to simulate real-world diplomatic dialogues and decision-making processes. Adhish Binod Pokharel, the Secretary-General and a Grade 12 student who has been involved with SGMUN since its inception, opened the event with a warm welcome to delegates and guests. He was joined by Zenith Karki, a Grade 10 student and Deputy Secretary-General.
Swastishree Gurukul has previously made its mark on the international stage, including participation in WIMUN in New York and events at the actual UN headquarters. Building on this legacy, SGMUN 4.0 continues to serve as a powerful platform for young leaders to develop intellectual, social, and ethical competencies through constructive dialogue and debate.
The opening ceremony featured prominent speakers dedicated to youth empowerment and global progress. Among the special guests were Cheven Rai, Managing Director of Che\&Co, and Reshmee Sunar, Associate for Diversity and Inclusion at UNFPA Nepal. Sharing her own MUN journey, Sunar said, “MUN gave me confidence. It helped me discover parts of myself I never knew existed. When youth thrive, communities thrive.” She applauded the students for securing over 40 sponsors for the event, calling their initiative both ambitious and inspiring.
Simrika Sharma, Head of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Kathmandu, addressed the audience as chief guest. Highlighting the importance of dialogue in diplomacy, she remarked, “Diplomacy isn’t just about suits and meetings—it’s about engaging with differing views.” She also underscored the relevance of youth participation as the UN celebrates its 80th anniversary globally and 70 years of its presence in Nepal. “We don’t see youth as our future—we see you as our partners,” she emphasized.
Swastishree Gurukul’s Principal, Neha K.C., praised SGMUN as “a stage that unites passion, diplomacy, and the power of youth voices.” She thanked all the participating delegates and expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their continued support. She reaffirmed the school’s commitment to nurturing critical thinking and global awareness among its students.
The school’s Managing Director, Mina Maharjan, concluded the inaugural ceremony by honoring the guests with tokens of appreciation.
SGMUN 4.0 will run until 22nd Asar, bringing together more than 175 delegates from over 40 schools in the Kathmandu Valley. Throughout the three-day event, students will engage in structured debates, refine their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and gain a deeper understanding of international relations and global governance.
As the conference unfolds, SGMUN 4.0 stands as a testament to what empowered youth can achieve when given the right platform and encouragement.
