Sindhuli – Nestled in the heart of the Mahabharat range, Phikkal Rural Municipality in Sindhuli is fast becoming one of Nepal’s most promising new travel destinations, a rising star that blends untouched natural beauty with rich ethnic culture and warm hospitality.
At 2,386 meters above sea level, the majestic Phikkal Peak stands tall as the highest point in the district, offering panoramic views that draw both local and international visitors. A newly built observation tower at the summit has become a must-visit viewpoint for sunrise seekers and nature lovers alike.
But it’s not just the views that are attracting attention. Phikkal is quietly reinventing itself through community-driven tourism. The village of Chanaute now hosts a thriving community homestay program where guests can experience the vibrant traditions, colorful attire, and languages of local ethnic groups, all while enjoying delicious organic meals prepared with fresh, homegrown ingredients.
Located along the Mid-Hill Highway and within a convenient distance from Kathmandu, Phikkal is especially popular among travelers heading to or from Eastern Nepal. Popular nearby attractions like Mahadev Danda, Sumna Pokhari, Kholagaun, Khansang, Solpathana, and Ratnawati offer breathtaking views of the Himalayan range, making Phikkal a perfect escape for adventure seekers and serenity lovers alike.
The Sunkoshi River, which borders Ramechhap, Okhaldhunga, and Sindhuli, offers thrilling rafting opportunities, while also supporting local livelihoods through traditional fishing practices.
Phikkal Rural Municipality, named after its iconic peak, is investing heavily in building tourism infrastructure, marketing local products, and developing the area as a self-sustaining tourism hub. Under the leadership of Chairperson Parvati Sunuwar and Vice-Chair Raju Baral, both dynamic and visionary youth leaders, the region is witnessing rapid development in roads, schools, healthcare, and eco-tourism initiatives.
Regular festivals, training workshops, and job-generating programs are helping the local youth turn to tourism for self-employment, injecting new life into the rural economy. The leadership believes that with greater support from federal and provincial governments, and tourism-focused organizations, Phikkal has the potential to become one of Nepal’s premier travel destinations, a true beacon of prosperity close to the capital.
Phikkal is no longer just a scenic stop, it’s a destination in the making.
