Gwarko Flyover almost Complete

Kathmandu – The long-awaited Gwarko Flyover, a landmark infrastructure project poised to reshape traffic movement in Lalitpur, is finally approaching its final phase, with authorities expecting it to open by mid-June 2025.
Initiated in early 2022, the project was envisioned as a solution to the relentless congestion at one of the most chaotic intersections on the Kathmandu Ring Road. Once completed, the overpass will allow smoother traffic flow between Satdobato and Balkumari, easing pressure on ground-level intersections and reducing daily travel delays for thousands of commuters.
The four-lane bridge, stretching over 35 meters in length, features approach ramps of 320 meters on the Balkumari side and 185 meters on the B\&B Hospital side. With a vertical clearance of six meters, it is designed to accommodate large vehicles underneath while maintaining unobstructed flow on the flyover itself.
Despite its strategic importance, the flyover has faced several setbacks during construction. Technical problems, including foundational issues and defective precast panels, led to reconstruction in parts of the structure. Additionally, waterlogging and subsidence on the Satdobato side forced engineers to revise and rebuild specific sections. Monsoon-related disruptions and project management turnover further delayed progress.
What was originally budgeted at NPR 170 million has now ballooned to approximately NPR 440 million due to repeated adjustments and reconstruction. However, engineers and government officials now affirm that final works—mainly blacktopping and line marking—are progressing rapidly, and no further delays are anticipated.
While the prolonged construction period brought inconvenience to locals, particularly with increased air pollution and traffic jams, optimism is growing as the project nears completion. Local businesses and residents hope the new flyover will not only ease traffic snarls but also enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Urban planners and transit experts, however, warn that while the flyover may provide immediate relief, Kathmandu Valley’s transportation problems require a broader investment in sustainable and mass public transit systems.
Still, the nearing inauguration of the Gwarko Flyover is being welcomed as a long-overdue milestone in the Valley’s bid to modernize its transport infrastructure.
