Dr. Binod Kumar Sah: From Siraha to Global Recognition in Pediatric Care
Dr. Binod Kumar Sah, a renowned Nepali pediatrician hailing from Golbazar in Siraha, has become a symbol of compassion and medical excellence, earning admiration both in Turkey and his homeland. His journey from a small village in Nepal to becoming an internationally respected child specialist is a story of perseverance, dedication, and a lifelong commitment to saving young lives.
Growing up in a modest family, Dr. Sah was deeply influenced by his father’s strict discipline and high expectations. Despite facing financial constraints and personal hardships, he excelled in his studies. After completing his early education at Janata Secondary School in Golbazar and appearing for his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination from Saint Joseph School in Biratnagar, he pursued science studies at Amrit Science Campus in Kathmandu. His academic excellence earned him a government scholarship to study MBBS in Turkey in the year 2000.
Upon moving to Turkey, Dr. Sah began his medical career at Lokman Hekim Hospital in Ankara. His dedication to newborn and child healthcare quickly set him apart, leading to national recognition. In 2016, at just 32 years old, he was honored by the Turkish government as “Doctor of the Year” for his exceptional service to infant and child health. This recognition emerged from an annual medical evaluation conducted across healthcare institutions in Turkey.
Dr. Sah’s achievements did not end there. Over the years, he furthered his specialization by completing MD and DM degrees in neonatal care in Turkey, eventually becoming one of the world’s most respected researchers in newborn medicine. In 2015, Turkish media and medical communities also recognized him as one of the nation’s finest doctors. More recently, he was awarded the title of “Best Child Doctor,” further solidifying his reputation as a compassionate healer. In Turkey, many even refer to him as a “Living God” for his life-saving work with critically ill infants.
Despite living abroad, Dr. Sah has remained deeply connected to Nepal. He established Nepal’s first Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Grandi International Hospital in Kathmandu, bringing advanced neonatal treatment to his home country. He has repeatedly expressed that all his accomplishments are dedicated to his late father, whose unwavering belief in discipline and hard work inspired his success.
Looking ahead, Dr. Sah has made it clear that he wishes to continue serving Nepal. He has stated in interviews that, since his country supported his education, he feels a responsibility to give back by contributing to public healthcare rather than pursuing private business. His journey from a village in Siraha to global medical acclaim stands as a testament to what determination, education, and empathy can achieve.
