Understanding the Context: The Gen-Z Movement
The Gen-Z movement, which erupted in September 8 and 9, reflected deep frustration among Nepal’s younger generation over political stagnation, unemployment, and the lack of meaningful reform. The movement rapidly gained momentum, with young people across the nation expressing their disappointment at the country’s slow pace of progress and limited opportunities.
As Nirvana Chaudhary, Managing Director of Chaudhary Group, explained, “The youth are not seeing the country move forward to a degree they envisaged.” He acknowledged that the frustration and criticism voiced by the young generation were “to a large extent, valid,” pointing to years of political instability and weak economic performance as root causes.
However, the peaceful intent of the movement was reportedly overshadowed by violent incidents and vandalism. Chaudhary noted that external elements had infiltrated the protests, leading to widespread damage. “There were infiltrative external forces, which hijacked the Gen-Z’s protests and started vandalizing homes, factories, showrooms, everything,” he said.
Heavy Losses but a Message of Empathy
The Chaudhary Group itself suffered significant damage during the unrest. Several of its factories, showrooms, and even personal residences were attacked, resulting in losses estimated at between 40 to 50 million US dollars. Despite the extensive property damage and business disruption, the company’s leadership chose empathy over resentment, focusing instead on healing and reconstruction.
“Like me, there are many other businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals whose homes have been vandalized for no reason,” Nirvana Chaudhary stated, emphasizing that the company’s decision to assist the martyrs’ families was guided by compassion and a sense of responsibility toward the nation’s youth.
A Symbol of Corporate Compassion
The employment program represents more than a charitable act, it symbolizes a bridge between corporate leadership and the country’s younger generation. It sends a strong message that the private sector recognizes the value, voice, and potential of Nepal’s youth, even amid difficult times.
By offering jobs to the families of those who died in the protests, Chaudhary Group is not only providing economic relief but also reinforcing a message of unity and national healing. The initiative aligns with CG’s long-standing vision of “Touching Life Every Day,” reflecting its belief that businesses have a vital role to play in shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society.
The Gen-Z movement revealed both the aspirations and frustrations of a generation seeking progress and accountability. Chaudhary Group’s outreach to the affected families is a step toward reconciliation, empathy, and social responsibility. While the company rebuilds its damaged facilities, it is also helping rebuild trust; between industries, communities, and the nation’s youth.
As Nepal continues to recover from the economic and emotional impacts of the protests, CG’s commitment stands as an example of how businesses can contribute meaningfully to social healing. It reminds the nation that progress is not just about profits or politics, it is about people, compassion, and collective growth.
Through this initiative, Chaudhary Group has once again demonstrated that even in the aftermath of turmoil, humanity and hope can prevail.
